May Meeting Notes
MEETING NOTES!
The meeting went well. There were a lot more people then I expected.
I gave a brief summery of Bike Week that I had gotten from Daniel just before the meeting.
I talked about how getting the money for the Jerseys has pushed back when we will get them. Tshirts should be sooner.
OTD Hill Climb software test will be at the next meeting. We will go thru it totally. From registration to finish.
In June the outing will be at the Wildcats @ the camp ground. It's fathers day. Perfect time for a camp out. Show up Saturday shortly after lunch. We can hike the trails, do some trail maintenance. Then at 4pm on Saturday we can have the meeting at the camp ground. Afterwards If everyone wants to bring something that would be good over or in the fire we can all cook supper and then anyone who wants to camp can. Sunday we will all ride our bikes on the trails there. This is a ride for every level. If you have never mountain biked but would like to please come out and give it a try.
We finalized the OTD Hill Climb registration and disclaimer. It was decided that we would do 6 King of the Hill "nicer" Tshirts for the winners of those categories plus metals for 2nd and 3rd places.
I asked about riding in the parade again this year. There was some mild interest. I noted that we need to get a banner for my pull behind trailer. That way people could see who we were.
That was about it. Meeting went a little longer then usual due to the discussion on the prizes for OTD Hill Climb.

April Meeting notes -
Well the meeting didn't really have a whole lot of structure. I blame myself. However here's what I remember -
OTD Hillclimb - Why cash prizes? Why not a winning Jersey? I'll communicate this with Jim and get his input.
OTD Hillclimb software - With out the full version of the software we can't really test it. Another test will be done in the future.
OTD Hillclimb video - Footage shot, now just waiting on my to put it together.
Daniel Bennett discussed bike to work week and what he's doing with local businesses and others to get a better event going for this year.
The Date was set for the Wildcat Hills Mountain bike weekend! June 20th! It's Fathers day weekend so lets get out there and to a little camping, trial work and biking!
Like I said I didn't take good notes. That's about all I can remember.
Next meeting is on the 16th of May! Lets do this one at Caddies at 4pm, we can ride to the Monument afterwards if need be.

I'd like to get this taken car of in the next couple weeks. I'll send out a email once we have 15 mens jerseys and can add a womens.
T-Shirts order is going in VERY soon also. It's a nice hi-vis dry wick shirt. So if you'd like a T-shirt please email me so I can put you on the list. Email - Zeroack@gmail.com

Recap - Recycle cycle
A little bit of a recap on the Recycle cycle event. We had a great turn out from our members. Rocky and Russ were great to work with. Everyone turned a wrench, pried a tire or test rode a bike. We got in approximately 75 bikes and we made 30 of them work...oh wait 29.(thanks Matt) Wow did my fingers get sore.

February Meeting Notes
Daniel Bennett shared Katie B's efforts to try and gather as much
data as we can to Good and Bad routes that bikers use to get around
town. It was decided that if the map could be eventually printed in
some fashion and provided to visiting or beginning cyclists would be a
great audience. If you have anything to add to the discussion Katie has
set up a Blog - https://wyobraskatandem.wordpress.com/…/scottsbluff-gering…/
Please contact her with any other info on good, bad and ugly routes around town.
LB39 is according to Nebraska Bicycling Alliance "It's still in committee, yes, but we are trying to get both LB 38 & 39 out, even if that means making some amendments to clarify the language."
Bike Rack update from Matt. Will be at the next meeting.
OTD meeting is Thursday the 26th at the OTD Building by the Legion baseball diamond. If anyone can make it that would be great. Please discuss Tshirts, Awards and volunteers. As for our club and the Hillclimb was discussed that we should test out any changes to how it's performed prior to the actual hillclimb. Everyone was in agreement that this would be a good idea.
Jerseys were tried on and we will hopefully have a final design come next meeting. I will probably be collecting for them then.
The Rebike? program will be on April 11th. This is the program that has been discussed before. Need some able bodied mechanics to take over the reins of a program that's been in the works for a few years. So if your interested it'll be at the NPPD Barn behind Safeway. Not sure on the time as of yet.
A Wildcat Hills "How to Mountain Bike" gathering was suggested. I suggested that we could meet Saturday afternoon and hike/repair the trails and then on Sunday we could ride them. This went over really well. We will have to choose a date.
I was contacted by Mike Kesselring who puts on a run up around Toadstool Park over Labor Day. He had interest in putting on a biking event and wanted our groups input. He was thinking later in the year. Something to think about.
Next meeting is March 14th at 4pm at Caddies.

What makes a good street to bike on?
Katie Bradshaw has come about this in a interesting way. I want to put her email up here because it hits a number of important points. So here it is. Great write up Katie.
After the article in the Star-Herald about the downtown bike racks, there was some discussion about cycling in the downtown area, as some folks (including some city staff) thought that it was illegal to ride on Broadway. It's not - it's illegal to ride on the *sidewalks* in the downtown area (Broadway, 1st, Ave A - between the railroad tracks and 20th, I believe). I had a long email conversation with Annie Folck with the City of Scottsbluff over the idea of certain routes (like Broadway) being considered "dangerous" for cyclists (her words), and I suggested that use of the word "dangerous" was best avoided - that perhaps a route was more "difficult" than others - and that rather than highlighting what routes are "difficult" that we should highlight easier bike routes. I linked to the bike map of the last city I lived in, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, as an example of a map that points out the best bike routes through town, while indicating difficult or higher-traffic routes. http://www.champaigncountybikes.org/map/
Annie was super proactive, and asked if I would meet with her to discuss the issue. She invited Paul Snarr from the City of Gering, as well as Jon Reiter and Sergio Rodriguez, who are the mapping gurus for the respective cities. Paul and Annie are both very supportive of the idea of creating an online bike map route, which can easily be integrated into the "Beehive" mapping system, which Scottsbluff has linked on its website https://scottsbluffne.map.beehere.net/ , and which Gering will be getting soon.
I think this is a great opportunity, for several reasons:
1. It opens a good line of communication between cyclists and city staff, many of whom do not ride and do not understand the needs of cyclists. We can let them know where there are bad potholes / gravel patches / etc.
2. If bike routes are highlighted on an official city map, when other infrastructure projects are underway along a route, there may be potential to add-on some cyclist-friendly upgrades.
3. If local folks and visitors can look at a map and figure out the best way to get from point A to point B on a bike, we may see an increasing number of cyclists - a critical mass that could help us all become more visible to motorists.
***********************************
Here is the first information the city is requesting from us:
1. What commuter routes do you normally take through the cities? Where else would you want to go on a bike? What are the best routes, and the difficult areas along those routes? [I'm hoping to gather routes and sticky notes on those Chamber of Commerce maps.]
2. What are the characteristics of your preferred routes?
3. What are the characteristics of routes you tend to avoid?
***********************************
This is just a first step, but I'm excited about it. I had also contacted the folks who put together the Champaign-Urbana map, and they said they would send us some information on their process. They also gave the following advice:
Creating a bike map is a LOT of work.
It is TOTALLY worth it.
Hopefully you have, or will have a active and energetic group to help you. (Like a bicycle advocacy group like CCB, that “knows the local roads” so the map is helpful.).
Maps take loads of data, so we had lots of layers of data shared with us from various county and municipal staff.
We contacted with a university cartography department to create the huge map file, that we could then get printed.
There is no “Right way” to create a bike map. When we made our recent major revision, we looked at some 30 odd bike maps from big cities to gather great ideas. So there are some key style and content decisions you will need to make along the way. The first is answering “Who is this map for?” We designed our map with new riders in mind.
This takes money too, so you will need to raise funds. We can share our budget list too.
You might look at the LAB list of Bicycle Friendly Communities that have won a bronze, silver, or gold awards that are close to the same size, and contact their bike folks asking for their maps to review.
If anyone has commentary on a direction to take this, or on how WNBC might best be involved, I'd love to hear it!
Cheers,
-Katie Bradshaw
