Recap on Oregon Trial Days....

With OT Days over I thought I'd share some things from the weekend.  First off the Hillclimb was great.  Turn out was a little off from last year.  Down 8-10 riders or so.  Everything went off with out a hitch.  Things to improve upon for next year are as follows -
Clearly marked Finish line.
At least three people at the top with pen and paper writing down times.
Then some one communicating that down.
Use a computer and spread sheet.
Promote Promote Promote.
The parade was fun and a great way to get some exposure.  I waned to pass on a huge thank you to all who waited and rode in the parade.  Things to do differently for next year -
Banners on Trailers.
Candy with our clubs web address on it.
More riders.
Meeting following the parade was great.  Thanks Allison for hosting and grilling up some great food for all of us.  We discussed the hillclimb and parade which have already been discussed.  Next thing was setting a time for the Dirk Bowman Memorial ride.  For those of you who didn't know Dirk he was a very avid cyclist in the area who passed recently while riding.  We have a pretty good idea of the route he usually took.  It's a nice 20mile ride on mixed dirt and pavement.  The date for the ride will be September 6th.  Time is still to be discussed.  Next up was a Cancer ride.  Also to be done in the fall.  This one will be for everyone of all ages.  More to come as things get figured out.  What wasn't discussed was time for our August meeting.  I'm good with either the 9th or 16th.  What's better for everyone?  Please let me know.

Thanks

Garrett

BRAN is just around the corner...

I had wanted to ride BRAN this year.  However life has come along and thrown it's things about and I'll miss it again this year.  How about you?  are you doing or have you done BRAN?

#45 Oof! The good news is, there's things we can do about this!

http://bikeleague.org/content/report-cards

If you go to the link and have a look you'll see where Nebraska is in #45th.  That's pretty sad.  Hopefully there is something that we as a club can do about this.  So let's make it to the next meeting, challenge that person to finally ride to work, make a group ride or make up a group ride.  Lets get out there and show people that cycling is becoming a thing in Nebraska.

Group ride in Sidney!

Looks like there's a new ride in town.  A easy going fun ride in Sidney Nebraska.

Need a little riding stoke? Have a look at this...

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook and I thought I'd share it here.  The imagery is awesome.  If it doesn't get you yearning to pedal down a near by dirt road I'd go have your heart checked.  Along with the stunning pictures come some great stories.  So have a look and get inspired to go make your own story.

Club Demos?

Would the club like to see demos on various bike related topics? How to deal with thorns or How to shop for a mountain/road bike. How to outfit a bike for bikepacking. How to bunny hop. If this interests you would you want to see the demo at a club meeting or at a separate time and place? Maybe after meeting has ended?

A flurry of different things......

UNL has there new kits -
I saw these today and thought of the Scottsbluff downtown streetscaping....

Minutes from the February meeting

On 16 February, 2014 at 1600 hours, The West Nebraska Bicycling Club held it's monthly meeting at Caddies Restaurant at the Gering golf course. The meeting was tabled by the President, Garrett Olsen, the Vice President Mel Griggs, the Secretary Pete Wysocki and the newly elected Treasurer Dana Weber. Eighteen members in total were present.

The following was discussed:

 1. Treasurer Position. Discussion was had on the pros and cons of having a treasurer position. The point was brought up that in the future the Oregon Trail Foundation may be responsible for the maintenance of all funds in the club, however, due to the infancy of the club alternative discussions were presented. A motion was made to accept or reject the position and the motion carried. Dana Weber volunteered to accept the position.

2. A discussion was had on dues. Discussion was had on why monies were required by the club for even simple things like postage, envelopes, printer ink, etc. The opposing view was that dues may keep potential members away, especially so early in the clubs beginnings. An alternative position was presented that would have members and associate members. Members would be entitled to all the benefits of the club to include a free T shirt and the right to vote at club meetings. Associate members would be entitled to all the benefits of the club, however they would have to purchase their T-shirts and would not have a right to vote at club meetings.

3. A motion was made to accept or reject dues and the motion carried. The dues were set at $20.00 a year for members, no dues for associate members. The dues would be effective from June to June, giving the club time to come up with a T shirt design and establish itself in the community.

4. A discussion was had for upcoming rides. Mel made a short presentation stating that the Kids ride will go forward as will the YMCA Fun Ride in May. A decision was made for the WNBC to support the Hill Climb during Oregon Trail Days this year and not attempt another bike race/ride until some time in the future.

5. A discussion was brought up on people friendly rides, for those who like to ride and socialize. These could be a ride to a restaurant, Ice cream shop, coffee shop, etc not so much in accumulating mileage but in friendly rides with a confectionery pause at mid point or the end. Nothing says that you can't sprint to Dairy Queen. Everyone was asked to come up with social rides that they would like to sponsor and either bring the idea to the next meeting or e-mail it to one of the executive members.

6. Currently, only Garrett has access to the Blog page so any information that you want up on the Blog has to be e-mailed to him so he can post it. The e- mail address for the BLOG page will be sent out by Garrett.

7. Mel will meet with Russ who takes care of the Wildcat Hills Nature Center and the surrounding acreage. He will see what we can do to help improve the trails and see which land is accessible and open to bicycle riders.

8. Clarification is needed from the membership on mountain biking and riding a mountain bike. Mountain biking is single and double track on all types of terrain. Riding a mountain bike can be accomplished on gravel and highways. Mountain bikes can do road and gravel rides and are very similar to road rides. Mountain biking is a lot more challenging and dangerous. If you ride a mountain bike you may want to be included on the road bike distribution list.

9. It was brought up that the folks at Caddies are willing to have us and our meetings at the restaurant. It is a restaurant so we should feel comfortable hanging around afterward, having a drink and /or dinner.

10. A constitution and by laws will be brought up to the membership at the next meeting. It will be put together and reviewed by the Executive Committee prior to then

11. Garrett asked that everyone give a thought on what the main thing should be that the WNBC wants to accomplish in 2014. Let him know or bring ideas to the next meeting.

12. The next meeting will be 15 March 2014, 1600 hrs at Caddies. See you there.

Sidney Early Morning Coffee ride

A week or so ago we had a decent morning with out too much wind.  So a few of us down in Sidney got together and had a little ride and drank a little coffee.  Fun was had by all once again.

New stuff...look up^^^

You might notice that there are now tabs at the top of our blog.  These tabs are soon to be filled with all the wonderful events we will be having for our fellow riders.  There isn't much there right now but there soon will be.  Pete is sending me email after email full of great events that are close to us.  So keep checking those tabs for upcoming rides and events.

Up coming meeting on the 15th!

Meeting coming  up on the 15th of Feb at Caddies Bar and Grill @ 4pm.

Next meeting is around the corner. Do you have something you'd like on the agenda? Logo ideas for the club will be reviewed. Discussion on a treasurer position will be discussed once again. Mel Griggs had a great idea for a kids race around the soccer fields that I feel is worth discussing. Suggestions were also made after the last meeting that maybe we should ride in the Oregon Trail Days parade. Ride ideas for Oregon Trail Days were plentiful, it was just getting the right timing. We'd all love to hear your ideas even if you can't make the next meeting. So drop us a email or post here on facebook. See you there.

Little naming confusion....

Guess there has been a bit of confusion on our group name.  Is it Bicycle or Bicycling Club?  I'd like to think we are a club that will be DOING things so I have corrected the name to Bicycling club.  We are riders not collectors.  Ok some of us are both(myself included).  Hope this clears things up.

Logo ideas? What's yours?

I just sat thru a hour long meeting at work this morning. I came up with a few ideas to work on. My favorite is the top left chainring and chimney rock combo.  What are your ides for our new identity?
